Geocache Description:

This is a virtual geocache, but you must actually visit the site. No armchair geocachers!
Sie müssen sich bei uns besuchen, den Ort.

An historic location along the Mother Road.

Route 66 -The Blue Cut

This was the high point for Route 66 in California. The steep climb up the Cajon pass came after a day or more of traveling through intense heat in the Mojave desert. Model T's, carrying dustbowl refugees, made their way through this pass, as did countless others, famous and unknown. There's an old federal migrant camp not far to the north.

The parking area at the cache location was once a rest area and truck weigh station along the Mother Road. Besides being an alignment of Route 66, the road also carried U.S. 91 and U.S. 395 traffic. The road is now only known as a county highway.

Your task is to find the following items:

  • Name at least two (out of three) other names for this road before it was a federal highway known as Route 66. "Mother Road", "Will Rogers Highway", and "Main Street of America" were later terms applied to U.S. Highway (Route) 66.
  • What is in the lower left center of the plaque?

The four lane roadbed was laid in 1931, and was a huge improvement over the original alignment. Sections of the original 1926 alignment can still be discovered in the area.
